The association of leaf sulfur content with the leaf economics spectrum and plant adaptive strategies

چکیده

Sulfur is an essential macronutrient for plant primary metabolism. Its availability can modulate growth in most terrestrial ecosystems. However, its relationship with other leaf and nutrient traits, hence contribution to functioning, remains unclear. We analysed traits 740 vascular species growing a wide range of environmental conditions Northern Italy. determined whether sulfur content per unit dry mass (LSC) associated economics spectrum, distribution among functional types (growth forms, life span categories, Grime’s CSR (Competitive, Stress-tolerant, Ruderal strategies) could help elucidate adaptive differences within taxa. High LSC values were mainly fast-growing representative R- C- strategy selection, thus the acquisitive extreme economics, reflecting strong potential connections ecosystem properties such as biomass production or litter decomposability. In general, was significantly positively correlated nitrogen content, ratio constant throughout strategies, phylogenetic effects evident. Our findings highlight that variation strongly suggesting additional nutrients seldom included analyses may also be embroiled context economics. different ratios expected across families, deeper insight from groups provide bridge between stoichiometry ecology, useful evaluation ecological responses global change.

Testing models for the leaf economics spectrum with leaf and whole-plant traits in Arabidopsis thaliana

The leaf economics spectrum (LES) describes strong relationships between multiple functional leaf traits that determine resource fluxes in vascular plants. Five models have been proposed to explain these patterns: two based on patterns of structural allocation, two on venation networks and one on resource allocation to cell walls and cell contents. Here we test these models using data for leaf ...

abstract while task-based instruction is considered as the most effective way to learn a language in the related literature, it is oversimplified on various grounds. different variables may affect how students are engaged with not only the language but also with the task itself. the present study was conducted to investigate language and task related engagement on the basis of the task typolog...

Peeking beneath the hood of the leaf economics spectrum.

It has long been known that leaf trait trade-offs exist (Reich et al., 1992) and can be viewed collectively as a leaf economic spectrum (LES; Wright et al., 2004) that identifies a manifold of strategies successful (and thus selected for) within, and among, communities (Falster et al., 2012). In short, a rapid return on investment (‘fast’ economic strategy; Reich, 2014) is typically associated ...
